May-June 2008 Challenge: Historic Event

judged by: Green-Arrow

This month's challenge is to construct a scene or event from history.

This can be something big, like the Battle of Carthage, something simple, like Lee's surrender to Grant, or something offbeat, like the pursuit of OJ Simpson on the L.A. freeways. Anything goes, so long as the event is factual (or reasonably factual — if you want to tackle something debatable like the Roswell UFO crash or Saint Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland, we won't split hairs on historical accuracy).

As usual, quality of the work and creativity of the subject matter will both be taken into account in the judging.

Bonus: I happen to have a $25 GameStop gift card that I'm not going to use, so I'll be offering that up as a prize to the winner (and as an incentive to get more entries)!

Happy building!

First off, thanks to Alex & Brandon for getting their submission in and making this a competition!

This month's winner is (after much back-and forthing): Almaxr!

This was a pretty tough one to call -- I like the look of Alex's rover a lot, and have to tip my hat to Brandon's last-minute PhotoShopping work. Extra points for making sure the rover's dish was pointed at Earth.

In the end, the scales were tipped by Almaxr's extra clever choice of topic, buoyed by the actual historical research he put into it to get as much accuracy as possible. (The relative direction of the plane, the ship's heading, and the morning light coming from the east are all correct!) Very nicely done.

Kudos to our three entrants! After two months in the judge's chair, I'm looking forward to building again...

For our Co-Op creation, I m responsible for the Rover and Bzz Aldrin, and BrandonE is responsible for the American Flag, Rocket, and photo shopping.

The clock is running, my friends.

I hope somebody out there is sinking the Titanic or scalping Custer or taking flight at Kitty Hawk..
